Shapton Professional Series Sharpening Stone 1000 Grit

The Shapton Professional Series 1000 Grit is a coarse-to-medium grade ceramic whetstone for the first phase of honing — removing micro-chips, setting the bevel and preparing the edge for finer grits. Comes in a plastic storage case that doubles as a stone holder during sharpening.

Shapton's Professional Series uses the same finely graded ceramic cutting media as the Glass Stone range, but in a 15mm thick stone format rather than the glass-backed 10mm construction. The ceramic abrasive wears down far more slowly than the aluminium oxide and silicon carbide found in most conventional whetstones, resulting in a longer-lasting stone with more consistent performance over its lifespan. Each Professional Series stone comes with a plastic storage case that converts into a practical holder during sharpening sessions.

The 1000 grit is the starting point for most honing progressions — addressing micro-chips and corrosion and establishing the bevel before progressing to finer grits for refinement and finishing.

How to Use: Splash the stone with water before use. Use the plastic case as a holder to stabilise the stone. Work the blade at a consistent angle across the stone in smooth, even strokes. Progress to a finer grit once the bevel is established.
