Which safety razor should you buy first?Making the switch? Aggression, comb style and construction
Mild razors are safest for beginners — comfortable, harder to nick. Medium suits coarser growth once you have technique. Aggressive razors cut closest in one pass but demand experience. Slant bar razors twist the blade for a more efficient cut on coarse or curly beards. Start mild if new.
Closed comb (safety bar) is the modern default, most forgiving. Open comb lets more lather through and cuts coarse or long stubble efficiently, but demands more care.
Two-piece heads unscrew for easy cleaning. Three-piece breaks down completely. Adjustable razors let you dial aggression up or down. Butterfly (twist-to-open) is convenient but rare in premium models.
