Choosing your first straight razorGrind, width, blade steel and quality tier
Full hollow ground is the standard for most straight razors — flexible edge, easy to strop, forgiving on beard hair. Half hollow and quarter hollow are stiffer. Wedge grinds are the traditional stiffest form, favoured for coarse hair.
5/8" is the beginner's default — balanced and manoeuvrable. 6/8" is the traditional workhorse — more presence, still manageable. 7/8"+ is for experienced shavers who want maximum blade contact.
Carbon steel takes a sharper edge and strops back more easily, but needs care against rust. Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant and holds longer, but harder to hone. German-made carbon steel razors are the traditional gold standard for craftsmanship and edge quality.
