Shapton Glass Stone HR 1000 Grit

The Shapton Glass Stone HR 1000 is a coarse-to-medium grade whetstone for the first phase of honing — removing micro-chips, small dents and corrosion and setting the bevel before progressing to finer grits. Made in Japan with Shapton's signature ceramic cutting media.

Shapton Glass Stones are the benchmark for whetstone quality — used by professional knife sharpeners, barbers and blade enthusiasts worldwide. Each stone is built around a 5mm tempered glass backing plate fused to a 5mm ceramic abrasive layer, producing a platform that stays flat far longer than conventional water stones and requires far less dressing to maintain. The ceramic cutting media is graded to exceptional uniformity — the abrasive your blade encounters on the first pass is the same as the five hundredth. No soaking required: a splash of water is all it takes.

The 1000 grit HR is the starting point for most honing sessions — addressing micro-chips, minor dents and any corrosion on the edge before the bevel is refined with finer grits. Follow with the 4000 or 6000 before finishing with the 8000 or 16000.

How to Use: Splash the stone with water before use — no soaking required. Place on a stable surface or stone holder. Work the blade across the stone at a consistent angle in smooth, even strokes. Progress to a finer grit once the bevel is established.
