Whether you're new to traditional shaving or aiming to improve your routine, the right blade is key. Learn how to select a blade that matches your skin type and hair texture for a better shave.
KEY CONSIDERATIONS
- Sharpness: A sharper blade offers a closer shave with less effort but requires careful handling, especially for those with sensitive skin.
- Skin Type: Sensitive skin might benefit from a less aggressive blade to minimize irritation.
- Hair Type: Coarser hair demands a sharper blade for efficient cutting without multiple passes.
- Durability & Cost: Consider how often you shave and the lifespan of a blade to find a cost-effective shaving solution.

Derby blades got me thru a year its just not as sharp so more passes = more irritation Excited to upgrade
I’ve used Perssona Med Prep Blades for over 25 years – I suggest you give them a try.
Can’t I just use the blade once?
I am happily using you Merkur 34 & Feather Blades since about March this year, I reckon I’ve previously used nearly every electric shaver., including Ronson & Sunbeam. I have 2 questions :
(1) During my Toolmaker & Engineering days (I’m retired now at 79 years young) I learnt that hot water dulls a blade edge……any blade……or knife for that matter.
(2) Your article above states that the Feather are designed in Japan……..but where are they manufactured ?? Cheers.
Hi folks. Fantastic article. I’m tired of throwing money away on multi blade cartridges. I found my dads original Gillette safety razor Nadler with original blades still wrapped up! It’s got a dial for closeness adjustment but I’m tearing up my face. Plus the handle gets slippery in the shower. Any suggestions to help me with this. Blades, shave creams, etc. I’ve tried clubman shave butter and it’s magnificent with my multi blade but I’m having trouble with my dads Gillette razor! It brings me back to childhood watching him shave as a young boy!
I look forward to hearing back from you
